ZusammenfassungEin Stein des Anstoßes im christlichen Denken über den Menschen ist die Lehre, dass er für sein Heil, ja sogar für seinen guten Willen restlos von Gott abhängig ist. Der vorliegende Artikel versucht diese Lehre philosophisch plausibel zu machen. Dazu wird zunächst aufgewiesen, dass die Welt und das, was in ihr geschieht, nicht von den Naturwissenschaften, sondern nur von der Theologie her erklärt werden können. Sodann wird gezeigt, dass auch die gewollte Tätigkeit des Menschen, auch und gerade die vollends gelungene, (...) gewissermaßen sich ihm zum Trotz und in Abhängigkeit von Gott vollzieht. Schließlich wird die These von der Fremdbestimmtheit des Menschen sowohl im Guten als auch im Bösen durch philosophische Reflexion auf die Konstitution des menschlichen Subjekts untermauert. Seine Aktivität ist von je größerer Passivität umfangen. Da es sich im Kern seiner selbst seiner Macht entzieht, ist es für sein Heil auf Gottes Gnade angewiesen. (shrink)

In der Abschlussarbeit seiner Schulzeit "De Theognide Megarensi" beschäftigt sich der 20-jahrige Nietzsche zum ersten Mal mit dem Gegensatz swischen Adel und Volk, was der Schrift als Ausgangspunkts späteren Denkens besonderes Gewicht gibt. Sein Untersuchungstobjekt ist dabei die antike Stadt Megara, in der durch Entmachtung des Adels die erste europäische Demokratie entstand. Nietzsche sieht den Adel als Scharnier zwischen Göttern und Menschen; der Aufstieg des nur auf sienen eigenen Vorteil bedachten Volkes bereitete den Absteig von Megara vor. Der (...) angehende Philosoph finder scheinbar en Megara als historische Realität vor, was er später in leicht veränderter From zu einem Mittelpunkt seiner Philosophie macht: Den Wetrekonflikt zwischen Adelsgesellschaft und Demokratie. Der frühe Text erlaubt es, die Anfange von Nietzsches Philosophieren zu untersuchen und sie einer kritischen Prüfung zun untersehen.The 20 year old Nietzsche studies in his graduation essay "De Theognide Megarensi" for the first time the difference between aristocracy and people. It has an enormous importance as a starting point for his later way of thinking. He examines the city of Megara, where the nobility was being deprived of power by the first European democracy. Nietzsche considers aristocracy as a link between Gods and human beings. The rise of the people, who were just as interested in their own well-being, brought the city down. Young Nietzsche seems to find in Megara a historical proof for what he made later a central part of his philosophy: the conflict of values between aristocracy and democracy. The early text permits to observe more closely Nietzsche's beginning of his philosophy and to give it a critical examination. (shrink)

Raymond Aron (1905-1983) gehört unzweifelhaft zu den grossen politischen Denkern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Professor fuer politische Soziologie an der Sorbonne hat er die Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ebenso begleitet und kommentiert wie als Leitartikler fuer die Tageszeitung Le Figaro oder das Nachrichtenmagazin L'Express. Er verband auf vorbildliche Weise die Rolle des politischen Beobachters mit derjenigen des Gelehrten, dessen Werk - trotz seiner Verankerung in der eigenen Zeit - bis heute nichts von seiner Bedeutung und Strahlkraft eingebuesst hat. Obwohl (...) Aron lange Zeit in Deutschland grösseres Ansehen genossen hat als in seinem Heimatland Frankreich, gibt es bisher keine Veröffentlichung, die als Einfuehrung in sein Gesamtwerk dienen kann.Mit diesem Band erschliessen Historiker, Philosophen, Politikwissenschaftler und Theologen einen interdisziplinären Zugang zu Arons politischem Denken. Die deutsch-jüdische Philosophin und Altphilologin Lotte Labowsky (1905-91), 1933/34 mit der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Bibliothek Warburg (K. B.W.) nach England emigriert, zählt zu den bisher weniger bekannten Gelehrten des Warburg-Kreises. Die Auffindung ihres "Nachlasses" im Marbacher Nachlass Raymond Klibanskys ermöglicht indes neue Einblicke in die Geschichte der K.B.W. und ihres philosophiegeschichtlichen Forschungsprogramms im englischen Exil. Auch das Leben der ebenso produktiven wie engagierten Wissenschaftlerin wird nun sichtbar. Über 550 Briefe Labowskys an Klibansky, geschrieben zwischen 1927 und 1991, zeugen von intensiver Arbeitsgemeinschaft (...) und Freundschaft eines transnationalen0Gelehrtenpaars im 20. Jahrhundert. Fichtes Verhältnis zum Judentum und seine Rolle als Wegbereiter des Nationalismus in Deutschland sind umstritten. Für diejenigen, die Fichte eine extrem deutsch-nationale Gesinnung unterstellen wollen, gibt es in den Werken des Philosophen, etwa in den Reden an die deutsche Nation, genügend Hinweise; und auch für den ihm unterstellten Anti-Judaismus lässt sich auf manche Stelle in seinen Schriften verweisen. Der brisanteste und immer wieder zitierte Beleg hierzu findet sich in der 1793 anonym erschienenen Schrift Beitrag zur Berichtigung der Urtheile des Publicums (...) über die französische Revolution. Dortheißtesineiner Fußnote: DenJuden»Bürgerrechte zu geben, dazu sehe ich wenigstens kein Mittel, als das, in einer Nacht ihnen allen die Köpfe abzuschneiden, und andere aufzusetzen, in denen auch nicht eine jüdische Idee sey.« Nach der Erfahrung von Auschwitz sind solche oder ähnliche Äußerungen unerträglich und jede Apologetik erscheint hier unangebracht, ja peinlich. In seinem Buch: Fichtes Idee der Nation und das Judentum hat H. J. Becker allerdings darauf aufmerksam gemacht, wie bemerkenswert wenig Kritik diese Äußerung Fichtes zu ihrer Zeit bei den Betroffenen hervorgerufen hat. »Was heute vielfach im Zentrum steht bei der Betrachtung [von] Fichtes Judentumskritik, war in den neunziger Jahren des 18. Jahrhunderts eher ein Phänomen am Rande.« Die Gründe für die verhaltene Kritik sind vielfältig. Zum einen ist es sicherlich der sachliche Kontext, in dem das Zitat steht, der die Zuschreibung einer spezifisch antijüdischen Gesinnung bei Fichte erschwert. Im wesentlichen geht es an dieser Stelle des Beitrags um zwei Überlegungen. Zunächst steht ein rechts- und staatsphilosophischer Gedanke im Vordergrund, der auch für diejenigen einleuchtend erscheinen kann, denen die provokante Formulierung unerträglich ist. Fichtes Argument lautet: Staatliche Autorität und deren Aufrechterhaltung sind begründet im Prinzip der Rechtsstaatlichkeit. Die Idee allgemeiner Rechtsstaatlichkeit schließt Privilegien und Exklusivitätsansprüche nichtstaatlicher Organisationen und gesellschaftlicher Gruppen aus. Als solche »Staaten im Staat« hatte Fichte neben dem Judentum vor allem das Militär, den Adel, die Geistlichkeit, die Zünfte und später auch die studentischen Verbindungen im Auge. Gesellschaftliche Verbände also, die sich, jeder auf seine Weise, dem Geltungsanspruch einer rechtsstaatlichen Verfassung zu entziehen suchte und auf überkommenen Traditionen und Vorrechten bestand. This target article presents a critical survey of the scientific literature dealing with the speed/accuracy trade-offs in rapid-aimed movements. It highlights the numerous mathematical and theoretical interpretations that have been proposed in recent decades. Although the variety of points of view reflects the richness of the field and the high degree of interest that such basic phenomena attract in the understanding of human movements, it calls into question the ability of many models to explain the basic observations consistently reported in (...) the field. This target article summarizes the kinematic theory of rapid human movements, proposed recently by R. Plamondon (1993b; 1993c; 1995a; 1995b), and analyzes its predictions in the context of speed/accuracy trade-offs. Data from human movement literature are reanalyzed and reinterpreted in the context of the new theory. It is shown that the various aspects of speed/accuracy trade-offs can be taken into account by considering the asymptotic behavior of a large number of coupled linear systems, from which a delta-lognormal law can be derived to describe the velocity profile of an end-effector driven by a neuromuscular synergy. This law not only describes velocity profiles almost perfectly, it also predicts the kinematic properties of simple rapid movements and provides a consistent framework for the analysis of different types of speed/accuracy trade-offs using a quadratic (or power) law that emerges from the model. A philosophical examination and celebration of the human hand.

Issues of interest, identity and values intertwine in environmental conflicts, creating challenges that cannot generally be overcome using rationalities grounded in generalised argumentation and abstraction. To address the growing need to engage interests and identities along with plural values in the conservation of biodiversity and ecological systems, we introduce the concept of ‘appropriateness of actions’ and ground it in a relational understanding of environmental ethics. A determination of appropriateness for actions comes from combining outputs from value elicitation with those of (...) interest and identity negotiation in ways that are salient to specific people and their relationships to specific places. Drawing on the Blue Mountain Forest Partnership in the Pacific Northwest, we propose factors of success for supporting appropriate actions: 1) understanding context and identifying key stakeholders; 2) surfacing a diversity of interests and building system-level trust; 3) building empathy for different identities grounded in specific places; 4) eliciting diverse values and seeking to understand their links to worldviews and knowledge systems and; 5) seeking out appropriate actions. Anthropology's approach to answering the question of the role of suffering in our lives is limited to empirical data and at best describes an individual's capability to endure it and make sense of it. Levinas was at odds to find meaning in suffering once it had exceeded certain proportions. Various cultures demonstrate greater and lesser capacities for integrating corporate suffering when it has crossed a significant threshold. What is the role of ritual and productive suffering in revealing meaning in suffering? (...) Some examples are drawn from the experiences of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago de Compostella. Society is at a crossroads. Interconnected systems, radical transparency, and rapidly increasing sophistication in skills, communications, and technologies provide a unique context for fostering social innovation at a planetary scale. We argue that unprecedented rates of systemic social change are possible for co-creating a future where humans and all life can thrive. Yet, this requires innovation in the conceptions, practice, teaching, and researching of social innovation itself to reimagine what it is and can be. As a multidisciplinary group of academics, (...) practitioners, and educators, we integrate our perspectives on social innovation and humanistic management to suggest the notion of systemic social innovation. We introduce the concept of “transformative collaboration” as central to facilitating systemic social innovation and propose a multilevel model for accelerating systems change. We then develop an integrated framework for conceptualizing systemic social innovation. Four levels of social impact are identified, and these levels are bracketed with a call for transforming individual consciousness at the micro level and new collective mindsets at the macro level. Blooom is presented as a case study to illustrate transformative collaboration, demonstrate the role of mindset shift in practice, and introduce four key ingredients to systemic social innovation. Finally, a call to action is issued for social innovation practice, teaching, and research. Most importantly, we seek to inspire and accelerate systemic social innovation that enables the flourishing of every human being and all life on earth. (shrink)

Il s'efforce de montrer que l'athéisme méthodique des sciences, le déterminisme naturel qu'elles impliquent, et le hasard qu'elles perçoivent dans la nature, ne doivent pas être pris dans un sens absolu, métaphysique, ce qui rendrait vaine l'idée de Dieu et de son action créatrice. Les sciences ont contribué à une meilleure compréhension de la révélation, de la bible notamment, mais elles n'ont pas mis (...) en doute les vérités essentielles de la foi. In this paper, we demonstrate (1) how harnessing stochasticity can be the basis of creative agency; (2) that such harnessing can resolve the apparent conflict between reductionist (micro-level) accounts of behaviour and behaviour as the outcome of rational and value-driven (macro-level) decisions; (3) how neurophysiological processes can instantiate such behaviour; (4) The processes involved depend on three features of living organisms: (a) they are necessarily open systems; (b) micro-level systems therefore nest within higher-level systems; (c) causal interactions must occur across (...) all the boundaries between the levels of organization. The higher levels constrain the dynamics of lower levels. The experimental evidence and theoretical arguments are shown to be consistent with previous research on the neuronal mechanisms of conscious choice, and with the interconnected multi-level processes by which organisms harness stochasticity, whether conscious or unconscious. In his response to my article, “Historicism and Science: Thoughts on Quine” , Paul Bernays distinguishes between two aspects of the article: my criticism of Quine's theory of knowledge and my contention that the epistemological foundations of modern science lead to historicism. Bernays substantially accepts my criticism of Quine, particularly insofar as I reject Quine's behaviorism and “physicalism”. He opposes, however, my claim that historicism is implicit in the presuppositions of modern science. I argued that the historicism inherent in modern (...) science is due to the essentially changeable character of modern science. Quine's theory of knowledge tacitly takes account of this changeable character a) through his view of sense experience as being constituted by posits, b) through his recognition that individual scientific statements are dependent upon a broad linguistic‐conceptual framework that is itself subject to change, and c) through his pragmatic conception of reason and the concomitant emphasis upon the criterion of simplicity. L’objectif de ce travail de recherche est d’étudier la distinction formelle entre les locutions verbales et les constructions à verbe support telles qu’elles sont présentées et décrites par les chercheurs travaillant dans le cadre théorique du lexique-grammaire. Dans ce but, nous avons conçu quatre tâches que nous avons proposées à nos deux groupes de participants : des locuteurs natifs du français et des apprenants du FL2. Nous avons testé plusieurs aspects de la maîtrise des constructions verbales complexes en français par (...) nos participants en mettant en lumière les différences dans les tâches de perception ainsi que dans les tâches de production des structures ciblées. Cette étude démontre que, bien que la perception des structures verbales complexes par les apprenants du FL2 soit assez semblable à celle des locuteurs natifs de cette langue, leur production représente un aspect assez difficile pour les premiers. The Genesis of Living Forms represents the first English-language translation of a key work by Raymond Ruyer, an important yet neglected figure in the history of twentieth century French thought.

Raymond Geuss has been a distinctive contributor to the analysis and evaluation of German philosophy and to recent debates in ethics. In this new collection he treats a variety of topics in ethics, aesthetics, and the philosophy of history with special reference to the work of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Adorno. Two of the essays in the volume deal with central aspects of the philosophy of Nietzsche.
